Welcome to the complete dramaturgical resource for the first part of Tony Kushner's epic play, Angels In America: A Gay Fantasia on National Themes. This revolutionary three hour play takes place primarily in New York City, 1985. America is in the middle of Reagan's presidency and the gay community is being ravaged by a new disease, AIDS. With the next millennium looming close, the characters of Angels are confronted with problems they can't find the solutions to: a boyfriend contracting AIDS, possible disbarment at the hands of the New York Bar Association, strange voices foretelling the arrival of a messenger, and more, and more. They face these pitfalls with uncertainty, as the older generation that once guided them is dying off. At the same time, questions arise as to how survival is possible in the midst of the modern plague and a dying planet.
